1. About us

CarHistory.co.uk is a trading name of Sawtry Media Limited, a company registered in England and Wales (company number 05080337), registered office Eco Innovation Centre, Peterscourt, City Road, Peterborough, PE1 1SA, VAT registration number GB200017196. Contact us at help@carhistory.co.uk. "We", "us" and "our" mean Sawtry Media Limited; "you" means the person using the site or buying a report.

By using the site or buying a report, you agree to these terms. If you buy as a business, section 11 also applies.

2. Our service

You can enter a registration to confirm a vehicle's basic details for free. You can then buy a report, which brings together records about that vehicle held by the DVLA, the DVSA and other record holders, supplied to us through our licensed vehicle data provider. The records in each report are described on our site at the time you buy.

3. Your account

You need an account to buy a report. Give us accurate details and keep your password private: you're responsible for what happens on your account. We may suspend or close an account that's used in breach of these terms.

4. Prices and payment

Prices are shown before you pay and include VAT. Payment is taken by card through Stripe when you order. A VAT invoice is available in your account.

5. Your report

Your report is usually ready within a minute and stays in your account for 2 years. It's for your own use in deciding whether to buy, sell or keep the vehicle. You may not resell it, publish it, or use it to provide a service to others.

6. Your right to cancel

A report is digital content that we start to provide as soon as you pay. When you order, you ask us to provide it straight away and acknowledge that you lose your 14-day right to cancel once we've started. This doesn't affect your rights if a report is faulty (see section 7).

7. Our report promise and refunds

If your report doesn't complete, or it shows the wrong vehicle, we'll put it right or refund you. We'll refund you if, within 30 days of buying:

  • the report doesn't complete and we can't finish it within 2 working days of you telling us; or
  • the report is for a different vehicle from the registration you entered (its make, model or colour doesn't match the DVLA record).

The promise doesn't cover:

  • records that are later updated, added or removed by their source;
  • estimates and guidance, such as valuations, fuel costs, road tax, ULEZ status and average mileage;
  • manufacturer and specification data (such as fuel economy, performance, dimensions, equipment and safety ratings), which describe the model rather than the individual vehicle;
  • the vehicle image, which is an illustration; or
  • buying the wrong report, entering the wrong registration, or no longer needing the report.

If you think a record is wrong, tell us. We'll check it with our data provider and, if they confirm an error, we'll correct your report or refund you. This doesn't affect your statutory rights.

8. The limits of our reports

Our reports are compiled from records held by third parties, which we don't create and can't change. We show the records as they are held when your report is produced, and provide them "as is". As far as the law allows:

  • we don't guarantee or warrant that any record is accurate, complete or up to date;
  • not every finance agreement, write-off, theft or other event is recorded, and records can be added late or not at all;
  • valuations, costs and other estimates are guidance only;
  • we don't offer a financial guarantee: we don't compensate you if a vehicle later turns out to have finance, to be stolen or written off, or to have any other history not shown in your report.

A report isn't a substitute for inspecting the vehicle, checking its documents and asking the seller questions. We recommend you have any vehicle inspected by a qualified mechanic before you buy it.

9. Our liability to you

As far as the law allows, we aren't liable for any loss or damage arising from:

  • records supplied by third parties that are inaccurate, incomplete or out of date;
  • any decision you make, or don't make, using our site or a report, including buying, selling or the price you pay or accept;
  • loss of profit, business, revenue or opportunity;
  • any loss we couldn't reasonably have foreseen; or
  • events outside our reasonable control, such as a failure of a data source or the internet.

As far as the law allows, our total liability to you for a report is limited to the price you paid for it.

Nothing in these terms excludes or limits our liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation, or for anything else that can't be excluded or limited by law, including your statutory rights as a consumer.

10. Using the site

Don't misuse the site: for example, don't make automated or bulk lookups, copy or scrape content or records, try to get around our security, or use the site for anything unlawful. We may block access that breaks these rules. The site's content, design and our reports' layout belong to us or our licensors.

11. If you buy as a business

If you aren't a consumer, then in addition: all terms, warranties and conditions implied by law are excluded as far as the law allows; we aren't liable for any indirect or consequential loss, or loss of profit, business, revenue, goodwill or anticipated savings; and our total liability for all claims relating to a report is limited to the price paid for it.

12. Changes to these terms

We may update these terms, for example when our service or the law changes. The terms that apply to a report are the ones on the site when you bought it. The date these terms were last updated is shown above.

13. Law and disputes

These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales. If you're a consumer, you can bring a claim in the courts of England and Wales, or of Scotland or Northern Ireland if you live there. If you have a problem, please contact us first so we can try to put it right.
