Free car checks

Some checks on a used car are free, and some always cost money. Here's which is which. Enter a registration to confirm the car's details for free.

Confirm the car for free before you pay

What's free

Enter the registration above and we'll confirm the car's make, model, colour, year, fuel and engine, free and with no account needed.

Use it to make sure the registration belongs to the car in front of you. If the details don't match, the plates may have been changed or copied, so ask questions before going any further. Our guide Cloned cars and plate changes explains what to look for.

What always costs money

The records that can cost you the car, or a large part of its value, aren't public. They're held by lenders, insurers, the police and the DVLA, and there's a charge to search them, so a free check can't include them:

  • Outstanding finance: whether a lender still has an agreement on the car
  • Insurance write-offs, and the damage recorded
  • Stolen records
  • How many keepers it's had, and past plate changes
  • A valuation

If a check is advertised as free, look at what it actually includes before you enter any card details.

What our reports add

The MOT and tax check (£2.99) puts every MOT in one report with a mileage check across every test, flagging drops, long gaps and unusually low use, plus keeper and plate changes, the specification and the safety rating.

The full history check (£9.99) adds outstanding finance, write-off and stolen records, safety recalls, taxi use and a valuation.
